This morning we head into The Museum of the Goldfields which included a free very informative tour about the rich history of the Eastern goldfields and the town's mining heritage. The tour guide was brilliant, a local who had grown up in Kalgoorlie and told us the story of CY O'Connor, who was an engineering wiz of his time, came up with a radical solution to supplying water to the growing populations of the goldfields. This water scheme plan is the reason that the Kalgoorlie-Boulder region has survived to the present day. Unfortunately this victory came at a great cost as O'Connor took his life just before the scheme was completed as he could no longer endure the endless criticism that it wouldn't work. A rather sad story. |
Both Kalgoorlie and Boulder have many original colonial style heritage buildings that continue to operate as banks, town halls, hotels and shops which give the town the authentic feel of stepping back in time.
No trip to Kalgoorlie is complete without a trip up to the Super Pit lookout which is the biggest open pit gold mine in Australia. It was massive!
The day concluded with an amazing sunset!
