After our long trip last year we have finally had an opportunity to take a leisure trip to Adelaide, SA. As a bonus we were joined by our son Ryan who had some time off work to fly in from Melbourne to join us. We spent several days together with several highlights. We visited the quaint town of Freeling which is one of the sites used in an Australian TV drama series, McLeod's Daughters which ran from 2001 to 2009. The series followed a rural country theme where daughters inherited a working cattle property "Drover's Run" and all the adventures that followed. We checked out some of the main buildings and props used in the series which brought back memories of watching the series. |
Another highlight was a trip to Glenelg - a popular beachside town which we always like to spend time in.
We also visited the Adelaide Botanic Gardens which is a very impressive expansive place of historical plant collections. We were super impressed by the huge Victoria Amazonica waterlily (pic below) with its enormous circular leaves edged with spikes. A flower can be seen at the end of is prime as well as a new one emerging.
Adelaide has numerous open green spaces and walks close to the CBD as well as along the River Torrens. Upon one of our walks we came across the unique Adelaide O-Bahn Busway system which we had never seen or been aware of despite numerous trips to Adelaide. It was very interesting!
We spent a day at 2 AFL Football matches - one in the SANFL (South Australia National Football League) watching the Eagles (Woodville-West Torrens Football Club) vs Roosters (North Adelaide). Then for the evening we attended the AFL (Australian Football League) game of Port Adelaide vs Fremantle.
A fabulous getaway for a few days!
