"This is a book of doggerel verse written to recall those places, characters, incidents and my reflections, through a working life centred around that as a stockman on cattle stations of the Fitzroy Valley, West Kimberley. The favourite reading material in Men’s quarters were the Larry and Stretch cowboy paperback, known as Deadwood Dicks to the station-hands. The term ‘Ride for the Brand’ is taken from this reading material, and simply implied being loyal to the brand you rode and worked for. This meant not parting with knowledge of what brand was on cattle killed for fresh meat, or if some of the neighbour’s calves were also pulled up to the bronco panel when branding, not forgetting there was a lot of unfenced station boundary country.
