This morning was going to be somewhat out of the box of our usual as Jess and Roo decided late last night to see if we there was a vacancy to join up on a Trail Ride before we headed off to our next destination later in the morning and there was! So a little nervous and excited, as it had been a long time since Roo or Jess had gone horse riding, we rocked up to the stables early and joined 2 others on a 2 hour trail ride through the Kalbarri forest country side and across, yes, into and across the wide Murchison River across to the other side up to and over the sand dunes to see the spectacular panoramic view of the Indian Ocean, the Murchison River and also the town of Kalbarri. Despite the weather being very cool and overcast, it was |
After our ride and, admittedly a bit stiff and sore, we headed off down George Grey Drive past Hutt Lagoon at Port Gregory which is a salt lake and often has a pink or red hue but as it was rather overcast when we passed it was pink only in a small section in the distance.
We also stopped at the ruins of the Lynton Convict Depot which is the most intact example of a regional convict depot in Western Australia. We also stopped at the quaint and historic town of Northampton and found ourselves in a unique store called Northampton Family Store and Sewing Machine Museum which was a great example of a country store of yesteryear complete with an attached museum full of just about every model of singer sewing machine you could imagine. before continuing onto our destination, the coastal town of Geraldton. After setting up quickly, we had a short time before nightfall to take a quick look around town, checking out the Point Moore Lighthouse which is the first all steel lighthouse built on mainland Australia in 1878. To cap off the day, just near the Lighthouse we spotted an Osprey with it's prey which allowed us very close to take a photo which was very unusual!
