Today it was time to move on from Monkey Mia, but not before checking out the early morning dolphin feeding session once again! This time not only were we treated to four dolphins returning, but also a visit from a green turtle exploring just near the jetty as well as a lionfish that Jess spotted a swimming in the shallows! That sure was quite a surprise! On our drive out of the Monkey Mia area we called into Hamelin Pool on Shark Bay which is one of only a few places in the world where living marine stromatolites exist. These living fossils contain microbes similar to those found in some of the oldest rocks in the world and is a significant reason as to why Shark Bay has World Heritage status. |
We arrived at our accommodation for the night - a last minute arrangement as we were surprised to find that all the Caravan Parks in Kalbarri were actually booked out. But thanks to the terrific wikicamps app, we found a unique place called Big River Ranch which is essentially a horse riding establishment with accommodation including sites for camping / caravans and thought we would try that out! It was a great spot, just out of town with a farm atmosphere and the hosts were great!
After setting up, we explored the farm and also went into town to take a brief look around. As we were driving through town we spotted the Mildura folk we had seen at Monkey Mia's dolphin feeding! So we stopped and chatted with them for some time before checking out some lookouts over where the mouth of the wide Murchison River spills into the Indian Ocean before getting an easy tea - fish and chips to enjoy back at camp.
