Today, at Ryan's suggestion, we lead the group on a day trip in convoy up to Wyndham which is Western Australia's most northern town and the Kimberley's oldest town and also lays claim to the highest year round average temperature of 35.6C (96F). The main attraction to see the town of Wyndham, apart from the fact that none of us had been there before was to see the amazing Five Rivers Lookout. We were not disappointed! The view towered over the town and Port of Wyndham as well as a panoramic view of the nearby escarpments and spectacular views of the five rivers - the Ord, Forest, King, Durack and Pentecost Rivers where they meet and flow out into the Cambridge Gulf. |
We then made our way back towards Kununurra and after a very lengthy hold up of road works where they were actually blasting the hillside to create a truck stopover we assumed, we stopped off at The Grotto which is a small canyon amphitheater of layered rock with a small waterhole that is a popular swimming hole during wetter times. It was trickling only but still a very spectacular spot to see!
We made it back to Kununurra in time to head out for a meal with the Army folk at the Pumphouse Restaurant which was just a couple of hundred metres from our Caravan Park. It was an amazing setting and a beautiful meal. Later in the evening Roo decided to take a quiet spell on the decks of the pumphouse and admiring the hundreds of catfish that were hovering around the poles of the deck. Also under the deck lights in the water was a large floating still crocodile. Roo thought it was pretty neat having an inflatable croc in the water as it floated still for close to five minutes. Then Roo saw the legs begin to move and thought, how clever, it is even animated! When she saw it begin to swim away she realised it was not inflatable at all, it was the real deal - a "freshie", a freshwater crocodile!
What an amazing, full on day!
